Ethel De La Cour
This is a portrait of Ethel De La Cour that we have stored in the ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵ archives. She was the first professional principal of Edinburgh College of Domestic Science. She was in post from 1909 until 1930.
Her appointment arose directly out of government intervention to improve child health. Our institution required a professional principal for the first time when it was charged by government to train teachers after cookery classes and physical education were both made compulsory in state schools in 1908.
